What is Eczema and how can we treat it?

Eczema is a recurring, inflammatory skin condition, most commonly occurring in young children.  The most common symptoms are dry, red and itchy skin.  Children often scratch the affected area to try to relieve the itchiness which can lead to raw and sometimes weepy skin.

Eczema can be caused by environmental factors such as the weather, heat, washing products, pets and grass.  It can also be caused by some foods, in particular, dairy, eggs, chemical food additives, preservatives and food colouring.  If your child is affected by eczema, it is worth monitoring their diet and what is coming into contact with their skin and making adjustments when triggers are identified.  Regularly moisturising the skin is also very important to not only heal the skin but to help prevent further eczema.  Miss Magoo’s Eczema Soothing Cream is ideal for healing, moisturising and protecting the skin.

Other ways to help manage and prevent eczema include:

  • Wearing natural fabrics such as cotton
  • Using sensitive or natural fragrance-free clothes washing detergents
  • Washing the skin with either lukewarm bath water, or a gentle, natural and fragrance-free bath wash
  • Keeping nails short
  • Taking a good quality probiotic
